Q & A WITH STEVEN ALGER (THE PIZZA STEVE)

Steven Alger (better known as The Pizza Steve) started out as a drummer many years ago, playing in bands all over the Chicago land. That led to work in clubs and theatres, and eventually music festival production. Basically, doing anything to avoid going back home.
At some point he got rid of his apartment, put the drums in storage, and started living on the road to tour manage for a band doing 250+ shows a year. He worked his way up, making industry connections while doing a handful of mid-size tours.
These days he’s grateful to be touring the US in a bus, and flying all over the world with top 40 pop act Lauv. You can reach him and follow his travels @the_pizza_steve // tpstouring@gmail.com

Favorite concert or live show you’ve attended as a fan (not for work)?
Oh man, that’s probably the hardest question on here.
Recently… The Raconteurs, or any Jason Isbell show.
Past… Oof, Paul McCartney rips pretty hard.
Did I mention Jason Isbell?

Are there any standard industry practices that you’d like to change?
The stigma of how getting less sleep makes you cool: “Well I only slept 4 hours”.

Since you began working in this industry are there any concepts or practices you’ve implemented that have had a positive impact on your work (reduced stress, saved time, etc.)?
So many things:
I wake up early enough to eat a real breakfast.
Allowing extra time to get places without rushing.
I personally don’t do booze on work nights, although beer is fine.
A quality cup of coffee.

Where do you see the industry going in the next 5-8 years?
Production is going to get even more insane.
Longer tours.

How much sleep do you actually get?

And how do you manage sleep deprivation?

What improves your day at a show?
Dogs
Familiar Faces

Our industry isn’t as glamorous as often perceived. What continues to motivate you to work such long hours, and be away from home for extended periods of time?
I love experiencing and learning new things. Every venue is different, every person and place is different. I enjoy constant change and adapting to it.

What advice would you give to someone just starting his or her career in the live production industry (perhaps something you wish someone would have told you when you were getting started)?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Don’t kiss ass, just work your ass off.
Be a kind and passionate person.

What's the most important thing in your suitcase?
Aeropress w/ quality coffee.
